Summer Sales: How Retailers are Attracting Tourists and Boosting Revenue (2026)

As the summer sales season kicks off, retailers are pinning their hopes on a unique trifecta: pre-holiday shoppers, a surge in tourism, and a mild summer climate. This annual event, running from July to August, offers a glimmer of optimism for merchants amidst ongoing challenges to household budgets.

The sales campaign aims for a modest 2-5% increase in turnover, a target that, if met, would push total sales beyond the 7 billion euro mark. However, the reality is that rising fuel and food prices, linked to the Middle East conflict, continue to squeeze consumer spending power, forcing many to cut back on discretionary purchases.

One silver lining for domestic retailers is the recently introduced 3-euro fee on small parcels from non-EU countries. This measure has already impacted overseas e-commerce purchases, particularly from Chinese platforms, giving local businesses an edge.

Official data paints a picture of limited growth. According to ELSTAT, retail turnover in Q1 2026 reached 17.11 billion euros, a mere 3.2% increase from the previous year. Adjusted for inflation, this growth is marginal at best.

Digging deeper, we see a mixed bag. While small and medium-sized enterprises saw a modest 1.1% turnover increase in Q1, the smallest businesses experienced a slight 0.1% decline. Medium-sized companies, however, thrived with a 7.4% turnover boost, or 8.3% excluding food, vehicles, and fuel.

Monthly figures for April show a 6.7% increase in wholesale and retail trade turnover compared to 2025, but this primarily reflects the performance of larger businesses.

Retailers are banking on foreign visitors to drive this year's sales. Greece's status as an affordable shopping destination, coupled with strong tourism indicators, bodes well for the season. International air arrivals have increased by 5% from January to May compared to 2025, with a notable rebound in May after a slowdown in April.

Travel receipts for the first four months of 2026 have surged by 36.9% year-on-year, reaching 2.79 billion euros. Revenue from EU and non-EU travelers has increased by 38.7% and 37.5%, respectively.

Under Greek consumer protection rules, retailers must clearly display previous prices alongside discounted ones, ensuring transparency for shoppers.

In my opinion, this sales season is a critical juncture for retailers. While the prospects of increased tourism and mild weather offer a boost, the ongoing economic pressures cannot be ignored. The success of this campaign will be a true test of resilience and adaptability for the retail industry.

One thing that immediately stands out to me is the disparity in performance between small and medium-sized businesses. It raises questions about the structural challenges faced by smaller enterprises and the potential need for targeted support to ensure their survival.

What many people don't realize is that the retail industry is a complex ecosystem, and factors like tourism, weather, and consumer confidence can have a significant impact on its performance. It's a delicate balance, and retailers must navigate these variables carefully to stay afloat.

As we look ahead, the future of retail in Greece remains uncertain. The industry's ability to adapt to changing consumer behaviors and economic landscapes will be crucial. With the right strategies and a bit of luck, retailers may just weather this storm and emerge stronger.
